In Loving Memory...

Ethel C. Halvorson

Ethel Halvorson, age 93, of McVille, ND, died March 1, 2017 at the Nelson County Health System Care Center in McVille.

Ethel C. Halvorson was born July 22, 1923 to Harold and Anne (Enebo) Molmen, east of the rural Sheyenne Church south of Pekin, ND.  Ethel was baptized at the Sheyenne Church where her grandmother Clara (Enstad) Enebo was the 2nd child baptized.  Her mother and granddaughter were also baptized there.  Ethel moved with her parents, at age 3, to Pekin.  She attended the first 6 grades at Pekin Public School.  In 1935, her family moved to Tolna where she continued school, and was confirmed at American Lutheran Church.  She married Clarence N. Halvorson.  They were blessed with 3 children: Dixie Lane, Ty and Sheldon.

Ethel was active in both Tolna and Pekin Lutheran Churches; holding offices in LDR, WELCA and was the Supt of Sunday School.  She was active in Valley Grove Lutheran until it was closed in 2009.  She also belonged to Illinois Homemakers of rural Lakota, and was president of Nelson County Homemakers.  She and her family operated many small cafes in the area, and operated Stump Lake Park for several years when roller skating and dancing were popular.  C.N. and Ethel won the TV Jim Rollin Polka Contest.  After Dixie Lane was married and the boys were attending NDSU, they opened their home to the youngest Joramo children after a car accident took the life of Mrs. Joramo and a daughter, leaving their father severely injured in the hospital.

While living at Lakota she worked at Miller’s Inn several years.  She moved to Aneta and worked for the Green Thumb at Parkview Care Center and Stan Moen’s farm home.  She became known as the “Pie Lady” baking and waitressing at her nephew Ginger’s café.

Her hobbies were quilting, crocheting and embroidering.

She is survived by 3 children:  Dixie Lane Holton, Minneapolis, MN; Ty (Holly) Halvorson, North Pole, AK; and Sheldon (Diane) Halvorson, Coupland, TX; 17 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; brother, Jim Molmen; and several nieces; nephews; and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents; ex-husband Clarence; sister Hazel Nerison; 2 grandsons; and 7 great grandchildren.

The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March, 4 2017 at 2 p.m. at American Lutheran Church, Tolna, ND.  Officiating will be the Reverend John A. Monson.  The organist will be Diane Hoveskeland and the soloist will be David Molmen.  Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services in the church.  Interment will be in the spring at Tolna Cemetery, Tolna, ND.

Dear Dixie, Ty, and Sheldon:
Lord bless and comfort each on you in the passing of your mother.  We all know we all are going to lose our parents, siblings, etc., sometime, but it still is hard.  It is not easy.  May the Lord give you peace and comfort.  Will be praying for you.

Dear Dixie, Ty and Sheldon,
I am so saddened to hear of your mother's passing.  I have such fond memories of her - she was so fun to be around - a true spirit who loved life.  When our family, Helma and George Hermel, Emily and I, lived in Fargo, we always looked forward to her visits.   She was so ambitious and an inspiration to all - young and old.  Our sincere sympathy.  Love to all of you as you grieve.
Gwen Hermel Wright
